This is promising news for those who reside in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and found themselves outside the nation due to the expiry of their residence visas: they now have a brief opportunity to return with ease.

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) has launched a provisional initiative that permits qualifying residents to re-enter the UAE even if their visa lapsed during their time abroad.

This new provision is temporary and will remain effective up until March 31, 2026. It also waives any fines that would typically be imposed when residency visas lapse while outside the country.

Who Can Benefit from This Temporary UAE Re-Entry Policy?

This relief is applicable for foreign residents whose UAE residence visas expired on or after February 28, 2026, while they were not within the UAE.

Ordinarily, individuals in this situation would be required to secure a new entry permit before traveling back to the UAE. However, this new regulation removes that prerequisite.

Eligible residents can instead return to the UAE and finalize the required residency procedures upon their arrival.

No Penalties for Visa Expiration During This Interval

A significant aspect of this regulation is the elimination of fines.

Qualifying residents won’t need to pay any fees associated with their residency visa expiring while outside the UAE. This provision allows them to return and regain their residency status without incurring additional expenses.

After their arrival, they can revalidate or regularize their residency through the relevant immigration authorities.

Timeframe for Entering the UAE

The opportunity to take advantage of this special policy is limited. Residents must arrive in the UAE by or before March 31, 2026, to qualify for the exemption. Following this date, standard immigration regulations will be reinstated.

Those who do not meet the deadline may need to adhere to the usual procedures, which could involve applying for a new entry permit.

Required Documents for Travellers

Airlines might request passengers to present proof of their previous residency in the UAE during check-in.

Travellers should have the following documents:

  • Their expired Emirates ID, or
  • A physical or digital version of their expired UAE residence visa

These documents are essential to verify their eligibility under the temporary policy.

Reason for the Introduction of This Policy by the UAE

Officials state that the initiative is aimed at assisting residents who were unable to return due to travel challenges in the Middle East.

By permitting them to come back without penalties, the UAE facilitates an uncomplicated method for impacted residents to restore their residency status and resume their normal lives within the country.

This action also mirrors the UAE’s progressive stance in recent years, which has incorporated more adaptable visa policies and temporary measures to support residents during travel interruptions.
