The Thai government is considering a reduction of the visa-free duration for tourists from 60 days down to 30 days, prompted by concerns of policy exploitation. Visitors will still have the opportunity to apply for an extension of an additional 30 days.

According to reports from the Bangkok Post, Thailand is gearing up to reduce the visa-free duration for international visitors from 60 days to just 30 days. The recommendation arises from a thorough review by officials who noted that the extended stay may have led to potential misuses.

The rationale is quite straightforward. A majority of tourists may not require a complete two-month stay in the country. Authorities feel that a 30-day visa-free allowance suffices for vacations, brief trips, or family gatherings. Those desiring a longer stay still have the option to request a 30-day extension.

Reasons Behind Thailand’s Decision to Shorten the Stay Duration

The existing 60-day visa-free allowance was established to aid in the revitalization of tourism and simplify travel logistics. Given that tourism significantly impacts Thailand’s economy, the intention behind longer stays was to lure visitors to engage more with the local economy.

Nevertheless, authorities express that the extended duration has also brought about challenges.

Foreign Affairs Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow indicated that businesses in Phuket have observed instances where tourists exploit their visa status to conduct operations that are typically restricted to Thai citizens. There have been reports of property holdings through local agents as well.

Concerns about Misapplication of Tourist Visas

Additionally, officials have highlighted worries that some individuals associated with online fraudulent activities have been entering Thailand on tourist visas. The review committee believes that the extended duration creates opportunities for individuals to stay in the country for non-tourism related purposes.

In summary, the government aims to facilitate hassle-free travel for authentic visitors while closing down potential loopholes.

Implications of the New Proposal for Travellers

If given the green light, the new policy will let qualified tourists stay in Thailand for 30 days without a visa. Travellers who need more time may still apply for a further 30-day extension.

Essential information that travellers should keep in mind:

  • Reduction of visa-free stay from 60 days to 30 days
  • Opportunity to extend stay for an additional 30 days remains
  • This policy does not target any particular nationality
  • The main goal is to mitigate the misuse of tourist visas

Officials have also pointed out that some travellers were utilizing the extended visa-free time to travel to neighboring countries while engaging in activities beyond the tourism scope.

Thailand Continues to Welcome Tourists

Authorities emphasize that Thailand remains inviting to global travellers. The proposed alteration focuses on tightening specific regulations without aiming to deter tourism.

For the majority of visitors, this change is expected to have little impact on their travel arrangements. A 30-day stay is generally adequate for popular itineraries that include Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Krabi, and nearby islands.

The government’s objective is to achieve equilibrium. Simplify the travel process for legitimate tourists while ensuring that the system isn’t exploited for business activities or unlawful practices.
