American Airlines has increased the fee for checking a second bag at the airport, lifting it by $5 to a total of $50 for domestic travelers.
The modification only impacts those who choose to pay for the second checked bag at the airport. Those who opt for prepayment, either through the website or the American Airlines application, will still pay $45. American implements a similar tiered approach for the first checked bag; prepaying for the first bag costs passengers $35, while paying at the airport incurs a fee of $40.
Delta Air Lines stands out as the exception among the “Big Three.” By 2026, Delta continues to maintain a flat domestic rate of $35 for the first checked bag and $45 for the second, irrespective of whether payment is made via their app or at an airport kiosk. While Delta promotes digital check-in to enhance efficiency, they have yet to introduce a penalty for customers who choose to pay at the terminal.
American permits travelers to settle their payments through their mobile devices, allowing them to benefit from the discounted price until they complete their check-in process at the airport.
