WestJet and Sunwing Cancel Winter Cuba Trips Due to Fuel Crisis

The WestJet Group has initiated what it refers to as an orderly cessation of its winter services to Cuba, immediately cancelling all reservations made through WestJet, Sunwing Vacations, WestJet Vacations, and Vacances WestJet Quebec.

In a statement released late Monday, the company announced that affected customers will receive notifications outlining their options, which include refunds or flexible alterations. In its FAQ section, it suggests clients who booked via a travel advisor to reach out to them directly.

This action is a reaction to the worsening fuel shortage situation in Cuba and the recent travel advisory from Global Affairs Canada, which continues to recommend that travelers exercise a high degree of caution when visiting Cuba.

WestJet asserts that currently, there are no safety or security issues for guests still in Cuba. This announcement coincides with Air Canada’s decision to suspend its flights as well.

WestJet plans to send aircraft from Canada with no passengers to help facilitate the organized return of guests who are presently vacationing in Cuba. All planes sent to Cuba will have enough fuel to depart safely without depending on local fuel supplies.

Last year, nearly 900,000 Canadians traveled to Cuba, positioning it as one of the nation’s primary winter sun spots. With the cancellations or reductions of flights by Sunwing, WestJet, Air Canada Vacations, and Transat for the upcoming winter season, an important question arises: where will these travelers redirect their plans?

The availability across the Caribbean and Mexico is already strained, with few hotels equipped to handle such a sudden increase in demand—especially in areas with reliable and consistent air service. This is likely to result in heightened pressure on the remaining sun destinations, elevated prices, and limited options for Canadian travelers at a time when winter getaways are highly sought after. Those residing in Eastern Canada hoping for a winter holiday may find themselves facing difficulties or steep costs.

WestJet states that this decision is in line with its commitment to prioritize guests and crew while maintaining the integrity of its operations. Details regarding guest cancellations and ensuing actions can be found at Guest Updates Hub.
