The countdown has begun for organizations intending to sponsor international employees in the U.S.

The registration period for the FY 2027 H-1B visa lottery concludes on March 19 at 12 PM (ET). Employers have limited time to finish, assess, and file their applications.

Keep in mind that the final hours are often chaotic. Increased activity on the system may lead to slowdowns or possible technical difficulties. Filing early is more than just advice; it can help you avoid last-minute problems.

Essential Preparations for Employers Ahead of the H-1B Deadline

When a business intends to submit H-1B visa registrations, certain essentials need to be set up.

Initially, firms must possess an active account on the USCIS online platform. This is where all activities, from drafting to final filing, take place.

Furthermore, they should have identified potential candidates for sponsorship ahead of time. Delaying choices until the last minute can result in mistakes or missed deadlines.

There’s also a crucial rule for applicants to note. Every individual must utilize the same passport or travel document for all registrations. If varying documents are submitted, all applications from that individual could be denied.

After the drafts are prepared, swift review and signatures are necessary. Any hold-up during this phase can lead to losing a chance in the lottery.

Significant Shift This Year: Salary-Based Lottery

This year introduces a significant transformation. The U.S. is transitioning to a weighted lottery that takes salary levels into account.

Here’s how it operates:

  • Level 4 (highest salary): 4 entries
  • Level 3: 3 entries
  • Level 2: 2 entries
  • Level 1 (lowest salary): 1 entry

As a result, positions with higher salaries now enjoy improved chances of being chosen. This alteration may significantly influence recruitment tactics, particularly for firms that provide lower starting wages.

Post-March 19 Procedures

Despite the new structure, the need is anticipated to surpass the annual limit of 85,000 visas significantly. Two selection rounds will continue:

  • First round: Regular cap (65,000 visas)
  • Second round: For candidates with U.S. master’s degrees (20,000 visas)

Outcomes are anticipated by March 31, 2026. If selected, employers can progress to the next phase. Submitting the comprehensive H-1B petition.

Timeline for Petition Filing

Candidates selected can start filing their petitions from April 1, 2026.

The filing period will extend until at least June 30, 2026, although specific deadlines will be provided in selection notifications.

Certain cases require prompt action. For instance, international students on OPT might need their petitions submitted before their work authorization expires to prevent employment gaps.

A Costly Update Employers Should Be Aware Of

There’s another modification that may surprise some employers.

If a candidate’s status cannot be changed inside the U.S. and requires processing through a consulate, a $100,000 fee may be applied unless the employer qualifies for an exemption.

This does not influence lottery registration but could affect the final decision to proceed with a candidate.

Final Consideration

The H-1B application process has historically been competitive. This year, it has also become more strategic.

With the introduction of the new salary-based system and tight deadlines, thorough planning is more crucial than ever. For employers, the wisest course of action is clear: complete early, check thoroughly, and submit promptly.
