Families visiting the UK will soon experience reduced waiting times at immigration. The UK government has announced that from July 8, 2026, children aged 8 and 9 will be permitted to use e-gates, provided they are at least 120 cm tall and accompanied by an adult.

Currently, the automated gates are only accessible to children who are 10 years old and above.

This update is anticipated to expedite the arrival process for families arriving at significant UK airports, particularly during peak holiday seasons.

What Are UK Passport E-Gates?

UK passport e-gates are automated systems for border control that verify a traveller’s identity through facial recognition technology.

The technology reads the biometric chip embedded in a passport and matches the traveller’s face with the image in the passport. If the information corresponds, the gate opens automatically, eliminating the need to interact with immigration staff.

This typically results in shorter lines and faster entry into the country for travellers.

Which Airports and Rail Stations Have E-Gates?

There are currently 293 passport e-gates in operation across 15 airports and railway stations in the UK. Major airports that feature these gates include:

  • Heathrow
  • Gatwick
  • Stansted
  • London City
  • Luton
  • Birmingham
  • Bristol
  • Cardiff
  • East Midlands
  • Edinburgh
  • Glasgow
  • Manchester
  • Newcastle

E-gates are also present at Eurostar terminals in Brussels and Paris, facilitating easier train journeys between the UK and continental Europe for qualifying travellers.

Who Can Use UK E-Gates?

Individuals can use the automated gates if they meet the following criteria:

  • Possess a biometric passport
  • Fulfill the minimum age conditions
  • Be part of an accepted nationality group or travel scheme

Eligible users include:

  • UK nationals
  • Citizens from EU member states
  • Nationals from countries such as Australia, Canada, Iceland, Japan, Liechtenstein, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, and the US
  • Participants in the UK Registered Traveller Service

The Registered Traveller Service enables frequent travelers to enter the UK more rapidly via exclusive border channels.

Why This Matters for Families

For parents traveling with young kids, waiting at immigration can be one of the most exhausting aspects of the trip. Allowing younger kids to utilize e-gates could significantly shorten wait times at bustling airports like Heathrow and Gatwick.

Final Thoughts

The decision to permit more young travelers to utilize e-gates is indicative of a broader trend in global travel, wherein airports are increasingly using biometric solutions to expedite immigration processes while managing rising passenger volumes.

For numerous families reaching the UK, the immigration experience should now be quicker and significantly less burdensome.
