In October 2025, the rollout of South Africa’s new Electronic Travel Authorization system, commonly referred to as the ETA, was initiated. The government is now looking to extend this necessity to an increased number of travelers.

This is crucial information for those who frequently travel for business or leisure.

--------- CONTINUE APÓS O ANÚNCIO ---------

Let’s simplify it.

What Is the ETA for South Africa?

The ETA is an online authorization that you must obtain prior to boarding your flight to South Africa. It is different from a visa that can be issued upon arrival. You need to apply online and secure approval before embarking on your journey.

The electronic travel authorization system utilized by South Africa employs automated processes and digital verifications to expedite immigration upon your arrival. After approval, you will receive a QR code, which you can present at the airport either on your mobile device or in printed form.

The primary objective of the ETA is to facilitate quicker entry and minimize documentation at the border.

When Will the ETA Be Implemented?

The implementation commenced in October 2025.

Phase One

Initially, the ETA was designated solely for diplomats from:

  • Mainland China
  • India
  • Indonesia
  • Mexico

This category applied to those attending the G20 Summit in Johannesburg. Access was restricted to:

  • OR Tambo International Airport
  • Cape Town International Airport

Shortly thereafter, Lanseria International Airport was incorporated into the network.

Phase Two

By late November 2025, the ETA obligations broadened.

Now, travelers holding passports from:

  • Mainland China
  • India
  • Indonesia
  • Mexico

must secure an ETA if they intend to visit South Africa for business or tourism purposes.

As of February 12, 2026, standard passport holders from these four nations are required to apply prior to travel.

Currently, the ETA is mandated only at select airports during the initial phase of its rollout.

Who Is Exempt from Needing an ETA?

A number of travelers are not bound by this requirement. You do not require an ETA if you:

  • Possess permanent residency in South Africa
  • Have valid rights of residence in South Africa
  • Possess a work permit for South Africa

All other individuals from the specified countries must ensure they apply.

What Is the Duration of ETA Validity?

An approved ETA permits:

  • Multiple entries
  • A stay of up to 90 days per visit
  • An option for one additional 90-day extension

The extension request can be submitted online.

In total, you could remain for up to 180 days provided your extension is granted.

What Is the Cost of the ETA?

The government has yet to announce a specific charge officially.

Rather, the fee is determined by reciprocal visa agreements South Africa has established with each nation. Simply put, the cost reflects what your country requires from South African visitors.

It’s advisable to verify the official website for the most current fee information prior to applying.

ETA vs eVisa: What Sets Them Apart?

South Africa already operates an eVisa system.

Currently, the ETA portal runs in conjunction with it.

Only those who qualify for the ETA can access the ETA portal, while others must continue utilizing the standard eVisa system.

The main distinction lies in efficiency. The ETA is intended to offer a quicker and more automated processing experience at the airport.

What Is the Rationale Behind Introducing the ETA?

This encompasses a broader context.

A significant number of nations now employ electronic travel authorization systems to evaluate entries prior to travelers boarding their planes.

For example:

  • Kenya
  • United Kingdom
  • Israel

South Africa is adopting this worldwide trend.

The objectives include:

  • Enhance border management
  • Accelerate airport processing
  • Draw in more tourists and investors
  • Minimize lengthy immigration lines

In essence, it enables authorities to vet travelers before their arrival.

Consequences of Arriving Without an ETA?

This is a critical point.

If you are obligated to have an ETA and you land without it:

  • You will not be able to apply at the airport
  • Entry will be denied

There is no option for on-arrival applications.

If you’re from Mainland China, India, Indonesia, or Mexico and traveling for leisure or business, you must ensure your application is completed before flight departure.

Implications for Travelers

If you are considering a visit to South Africa in 2026 and possess a passport from one of the impacted nations, make it a priority to include the ETA in your travel preparations.

  • Submit your application early.
  • Verify airport eligibility.
  • Have your QR code accessible.

The system aims to streamline entry; however, compliance with the regulations is essential.

For frequent travelers, this represents yet another advancement in the ongoing global shift toward digital border management.
