Commencing December 26, IndiGo will start providing compensation to passengers after numerous flights were cancelled and delayed in early December. The airline intends to distribute vouchers and funds to those who experienced extensive waits and significant disruptions.
From December 26, IndiGo will initiate compensation for passengers impacted by the extensive flight disruptions earlier this month, in response to directives from the civil aviation ministry.
As per several sources, the government instructed IndiGo last week to commence payments to affected travelers who endured issues due to the significant flight cancellations occurring from December 3 to December 9. During this span, various flights faced cancellations or severe delays, wreaking havoc at numerous airports across India.
Travel Vouchers Worth ₹10,000 and Additional Payments for Delayed Passengers
Passengers who experienced prolonged delays at airports will receive a travel voucher amounting to 10,000 rupees. Additionally, they will be entitled to receive another 5,000 to 10,000 rupees according to government regulations.
Officials from IndiGo mentioned that the airline will prioritize compensating those passengers who booked directly via its website, as it already possesses their information.
Those who made reservations through travel agents or online travel sites will also be compensated, although IndiGo will first need to gather their details.
Oversight by DGCA and Air Seva
The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) expressed its intention to ensure that every affected passenger receives their compensation. The DGCA has been tasked with overseeing this process, with the ministry monitoring advancements through the Air Seva portal.
Delays in Refunds for Certain Bookings
IndiGo has initiated refund processes for the disrupted flights. However, numerous passengers who made reservations via online travel agencies report that they have yet to receive their refunds.
The airline asserts that it has already issued refunds without any deductions and that it is now the obligation of the travel agencies to transfer the funds to the customers.
Recently, the DGCA convened with these online agencies, directing them to process full refunds without retaining any fees.
Wide-Reaching Impact on Flights Throughout India
The impact was far-reaching. Between December 1 and 9, IndiGo cancelled a total of 4,354 flights. More than 2,500 domestic and 51 international flights were suspended on the specific days of December 3, 4, and 5.
The forthcoming compensation initiative should provide some relief to the multitude of passengers who experienced cancellations and significant delays earlier in the month.
