Harry Sommer is resigning from his positions as president, CEO, and director of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, effective immediately. His successor is John W. Chidsey, who currently serves as a director of NCLH, with the change taking effect right away.
Chidsey has previously held the role of CEO at Subway Restaurants for five years, during which he spearheaded a multi-year strategy to revitalize the brand, upgrade operations, and bolster the company’s prospects for long-term growth. He joined the NCLH Board of Directors in February 2025 after an earlier stint on the Board from 2013 until 2022.
“Throughout his time on the Board of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, John has proven to be a highly esteemed leader and strategic advisor. He is well-suited to guide the Company through its forthcoming phase of implementation and performance enhancement,” stated Stella David, chair of the Board.
“John has shown his capability in steering businesses through significant transformation while maintaining a commitment to operational excellence and accountability. We are thrilled for John to take on the roles of President and Chief Executive Officer, as we trust that his guidance will improve execution, enhance financial outcomes, decrease leverage, and drive enduring value for shareholders.”
Sommer has been at the helm of NCLH since July 2023 when he took over from Frank Del Rio, who stepped away from the industry. Prior to this, Sommer held the role of president and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line from 2020 to 2023.
David expressed gratitude to Sommer for “his many years of commitment and service to the Company.”
Sommer marks the second executive to be ousted by the Board within less than a year. Back in August 2025, David Herrera resigned as president of Norwegian Cruise Line.
“I am eager to build on the robust foundation already established by the Company’s award-winning brands, committed team and crew members, and devoted guests,” Chidsey remarked. “In my new role, my focus will be on collaborating with the Board and management team to refine our execution, boost performance, and continue delivering outstanding vacation experiences while creating sustainable, long-term value.”
Chidsey has also held notable positions as CEO, president, and chief financial officer at Burger King Holdings Inc. Earlier in his professional journey, Chidsey took on senior leadership responsibilities at Cendant Corporation, serving as chairman and CEO of two prominent divisions. He managed the Vehicle Services Division, which included brands like Avis Rent A Car, Budget Rent A Car Systems, PHH, and Wright Express, along with the Financial Services Division comprising Jackson Hewitt.
