With rising global jet fuel prices, Air India has revised its fuel surcharges for both domestic and international flights. The new fees will take effect from 08 April 2026, while certain long-haul routes will see adjustments starting 10 April 2026.

This article outlines what passengers can anticipate and the potential effects on airfare.

Domestic Flights: Introduction of Distance-Dependent Fuel Surcharge

As of 08 April 2026 (0901 hrs IST), Air India is transitioning from a standard fuel surcharge to a distance-dependent model for domestic flights, following the government’s move to restrict Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) price increases to 25%.

The revised fuel surcharge will be applicable to all Air India and Air India Express flights.

Per Passenger Fuel Surcharge (Per Flight Segment)

Distance (km) Fuel Surcharge
0–500 km ₹299
501–1000 km ₹399
1001–1500 km ₹549
1501–2000 km ₹749
2000+ km ₹899

This signifies that shorter journeys will experience lesser increases, whereas longer domestic flights may incur slightly higher fuel charges.

International Flights: Increased Fuel Expenses Result in Surcharge Rise

Recent weeks have seen a significant surge in global fuel prices. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has reported the average jet fuel price escalating from USD 99.40 per barrel in February to USD 195.19 by late March 2026, almost doubling in a brief timeframe.

A key consideration is the refinery margin, or crack spread, which has substantially increased in just a matter of weeks.

According to Air India, the new surcharge does not completely offset the surge in fuel costs, indicating the airline is absorbing part of the increase.

International Fuel Surcharge by Region

Effective 08 April 2026 (0901 hrs IST)

Region Fuel Surcharge
SAARC (excluding Bangladesh) USD 24
Middle East / West Asia USD 50
China & Southeast Asia (excluding Singapore) USD 100
Singapore USD 60
Africa USD 130

Effective 10 April 2026 (0001 hrs IST)

Region Fuel Surcharge
Europe (including UK) USD 205
North America USD 280
Australia USD 280

Updates for routes to Bangladesh, Japan, Hong Kong, and South Korea will be communicated later pending necessary regulatory approvals.

Essential Information for Passengers

It is important to note that tickets booked prior to the implementation of the new surcharge will remain unaffected, unless passengers modify their travel dates or itineraries that necessitate a fare recalculation.

Air India has indicated that fuel surcharges will be reassessed regularly based on fluctuations in global fuel prices.

Global Airlines Raising Fuel Surcharges

Air India is among many airlines revising their fuel surcharges. Airlines across the globe are increasing additional charges on tickets in response to the sharp rise in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices amid ongoing tensions related to the Iran–Israel conflict.

Jet fuel prices have surged from approximately $2.20 per gallon to nearly $4.50 per gallon, representing an increase of over 100% in a short timeframe.

Airlines Boosting Fuel Surcharges

In addition to Air India, various international airlines have raised their fuel surcharges in reaction to escalating operational costs:

  • Cathay Pacific
  • Air France–KLM
  • Air New Zealand
  • Hong Kong Airlines
  • Greater Bay Airlines
  • AirAsia
  • Thai Airways
  • Qantas
  • Scandinavian Airlines (SAS)
  • Korean Air
  • IndiGo
  • Akasa Air
  • Spring Airlines
  • SunExpress
  • Pakistan International Airlines (PIA)
  • Virgin Australia

Implications for Passengers

Fuel surcharges are a standard aspect of airline pricing, but significant fluctuations often indicate instability in oil markets. For travelers, this could lead to slight increases in ticket prices, particularly on long-haul international flights.

If you’re considering travel soon, securing tickets early might help prevent further fare increases should fuel prices continue their upward trend.
