Air New Zealand is set to launch Skynest sleep pods for Economy passengers on ultra-long flights. Lie-flat bunk beds will be accessible starting November 2026, beginning at NZD $495 per session.
Traveling long distances to New Zealand can be quite challenging. Enduring 15 hours or more in a seat can leave even the most seasoned travelers feeling drained. This is the very issue Air New Zealand aims to address with its innovative Skynest sleep pods.
The airline intends to offer lie-flat bunk beds specifically crafted for Economy and Premium Economy travelers. The concept is straightforward: provide passengers with a genuine space to lay down and recuperate during some of the longest commercial journeys globally.
A New Approach to Sleeping in Economy Class
The Skynest will consist of six lie-flat pods configured like bunk beds within the aircraft. These will be situated between the Economy and Premium Economy sections on the Boeing 787-9.
Each pod will provide a private area for sleeping, complete with a full-length mattress, pillow, sheets, and a blanket. Additionally, passengers can enjoy gentle lighting, ventilation, and charging ports. The arrangement aims to create a tranquil and cozy environment, even at cruising altitudes of 35,000 feet.
Travelers booking either Economy or Premium Economy seats have the option to include a four-hour sleep session in their itinerary. The airline has designed these sessions to align with natural sleep patterns, assisting passengers in settling down, sleeping soundly, and awakening revitalized.
At the start, two Skynest sessions will be offered per flight.
The Importance of Skynest for Long-Haul Journeys
New Zealand is among the most isolated travel destinations on the planet. Many travelers spend extensive time flying to reach the nation. Air New Zealand is convinced that improved rest can greatly enhance the travel experience.
During the development phase, the airline has validated the concept with over 200 customers. The aim is to enhance comfort without necessitating the purchase of high-cost Business Class tickets.
Skynest also builds upon the airline’s previous innovation, the Skycouch, which allows Economy class passengers to create a couch-like seating arrangement.

A Minor Modification That Could Enhance Long Flights
The reality is that many travelers accept that long-haul flights can be exhausting. However, improved rest can significantly impact how refreshed individuals feel upon arrival.
Skynest is not intended to take the place of premium cabins. Instead, it simply provides a wider range of passengers with the opportunity to get adequate sleep during ultra-long flights.
For anyone considering a visit to New Zealand, this could greatly ease the journey.
