If you’re organizing a spontaneous visit to Egypt and counting on obtaining a visa on arrival, here’s something important to note.

Beginning Sunday, March 1, Egypt will have a $5 increase in the fee for its emergency entry visa for international travelers. This update has been validated by the Egyptian Travel Agents Association and is applicable at all Egyptian ports of entry.

Though it may appear to be a minor adjustment, it significantly impacts those arriving without an eVisa.

What Has Changed?

The fee for the regular single-entry visa upon arrival has been raised by $5.

Egypt’s visa-on-arrival is granted to visitors who come to the nation without pre-arranging a visa. Typically referred to as an emergency visa, it is issued upon entering the country.

This regulation is now applicable at key entry points, including:

  • Cairo International Airport
  • Hurghada International Airport
  • Sharm El Sheikh International Airport

All seaports that accommodate tourist arrival will also implement the adjusted fee.

New Visa-On-Arrival Fee

$30 for a single-entry tourist visa at airports and seaports. This visa remains valid for a duration of up to 30 days.

Who Needs to Pay?

The new price applies to foreign visitors eligible for a visa on arrival who opt to obtain it at the airport or seaport. Travelers from countries that meet the requirements for Egypt’s visa-on-arrival will still be able to receive the visa upon arrival; only the cost has changed.

If you have already obtained your visa through the official eVisa platform prior to your trip, this update does not impact you.

Why This Matters for Travelers

While five dollars might not appear substantial, it is essential to consider the broader implications.

Egypt remains a highly sought-after destination in North Africa and the Middle East. With attractions ranging from the Giza pyramids to the beaches of the Red Sea, millions of travelers visit the country annually.

Even minor alterations to visa policies or fees can impact travel budgets, particularly for families or groups.

For instance:

  • A family of four will incur an additional total cost of $20.
  • Tour groups managing dozens of visitors will need to adjust their cost estimates.
  • Travel agents must update their package pricing to incorporate the new fee.

This situation also emphasizes a critical travel recommendation. To avoid unexpected fees and lengthy queues at airports, it is often more convenient to apply for an Egypt eVisa before your departure.

Is Egypt Still Offering a Visa-On-Arrival?

Indeed. Egypt continues to provide a visa-on-arrival for eligible nationalities. The steps to obtain the visa remain unchanged:

  1. Arrive at the airport.
  2. Acquire the visa sticker from the bank counter.
  3. Submit it to immigration control.

The only modification is the updated fee.

What Smart Travelers Should Do

If you’re planning a visit to Egypt shortly, keep these straightforward steps in mind:

  • Verify if your nationality qualifies for a visa-on-arrival.
  • Weigh the costs of the visa-on-arrival against the official Egypt eVisa.
  • Bring US dollars in cash if you intend to pay at the airport.
  • Allocate extra time to navigate potential queues in busy hubs like Cairo.

Egypt continues to welcome international tourists, and there are no new entry restrictions associated with the increase in fees.

Final Thoughts

As of March 1, Egypt has increased the emergency visa-on-arrival fee by $5. The processing method remains the same; only the cost has changed.

If you are gearing up for a journey to witness the Pyramids, navigate the Nile, or unwind in Sharm El Sheikh, remember to account for the updated visa fee before your departure.

For frequent travelers, this serves as a simple reminder: always review entry regulations and visa fees before you leave. Small changes can occur quietly and may surprise you at the airport.
