Passengers booking flights with the Air India group might observe slightly elevated fares starting this week. The airline has divulged a phased introduction of fuel surcharges on several domestic and international routes in response to the steep increase in jet fuel costs.

This action arises as the prices of aviation turbine fuel continue to ascend due to supply hindrances stemming from the ongoing geopolitical issues in the Gulf region.

For airlines, the cost of fuel is significant. It generally represents nearly 40 percent of operating expenses, thus a small surge in fuel prices can swiftly impact ticket costs.

Reasons for Air India’s Fuel Surcharge

Since the beginning of March 2026, the hike in jet fuel prices has been attributed to supply disruptions. Airlines globally are experiencing this pressure.

In the case of India, the complexity of the situation increases. Aviation fuel incurs significant excise duty and state VAT, particularly in major hubs like Delhi and Mumbai, which elevates fuel costs for the airlines working out of these airports.

The implication is straightforward. Should airlines swallow the entirety of the increase, some routes may prove too costly to maintain. Enforcing a surcharge permits them to manage these escalating expenses without terminating services.

Phase 1: New Fuel Surcharges Effective 12 March 2026

The initial phase commences on 12 March 2026 and is applicable to new bookings exclusively. Current tickets will remain unchanged unless passengers alter their travel dates or routes.

Here’s what travelers can anticipate.

Domestic and Short-Haul Routes

Region New Fuel Surcharge
Domestic India INR 399
SAARC countries INR 399
West Asia / Middle East USD 10

Other International Routes

Region Previous Surcharge Increase New Surcharge
Southeast Asia USD 40 USD 20 USD 60
Africa USD 60 USD 30 USD 90

Flights to and from Singapore previously did not charge a fuel surcharge. With the onset of Phase 1, they will now incur the same surcharge as other Southeast Asian routes.

Phase 2: Additional Modifications from 18 March 2026

A subsequent increase will be implemented on 18 March 2026 for long-haul routes.

Region Previous Surcharge Increase New Surcharge
Europe USD 100 USD 25 USD 125
North America USD 150 USD 50 USD 200
Australia USD 150 USD 50 USD 200

These surcharges will be applied to flights operated by both Air India and its low-cost affiliate, Air India Express.

Phase 3: Upcoming Changes for East Asia

The airline has also confirmed that a third phase is forthcoming. This will pertain to routes linking India to prominent East Asian cities, such as:

  • Hong Kong
  • Japan
  • South Korea

Specific details and exact surcharge amounts for these markets will be disclosed at a later date.

Implications for Travellers

If you have secured your ticket prior to the announced dates, your fare will remain the same.

Nonetheless, if you alter your travel date or itinerary later on, the ticket price may be recalculated, and the new surcharge could apply.

For individuals contemplating international journeys in the upcoming months, the main takeaway is clear. Ticket prices may see a slight increase as airlines respond to elevated fuel expenses.

Will the Fuel Surcharge Be Permanent?

Typically, airlines do not maintain surcharges indefinitely. Air India states it will periodically review the fuel surcharge and adjust it based on fluctuations in fuel prices in the upcoming months.

Should jet fuel prices decline, the surcharge might likewise be reduced or eliminated.

For now, travelers making reservations after 12 March 2026 should be prepared for a minor extra fee integrated into their fares.
