Seabourn has decided to conclude its expedition submarine initiative at the end of this Antarctic season due to minimal involvement, complex maintenance, and regulatory challenges that have increasingly restricted the areas in which the submarines could operate.
On Thursday, Rob Coleman, the senior vice president of sales at Seabourn, shared this information in a communication to travel partners. As a result, the uniquely designed submarines currently aboard Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit are set to be withdrawn from service over the upcoming six weeks.
“Our specially designed submarines have been an exceptional aspect of our expedition services. However, guest turnout was below what we expected, and the program demanded a high degree of specialized knowledge for upkeep and re-certification of the submarines. Furthermore, changing regulatory standards in certain areas have increasingly restricted where and how submarine services can be conducted,” Coleman stated in the communication.
The submarines were integrated into the original design of the vessels when Seabourn Venture was launched in 2022, followed by Seabourn Pursuit the subsequent year. They were originally marketed as a means for guests to connect more intimately with nature during expedition journeys. Even with their departure, they will not be the sole expedition amenities available on either ship, as Seabourn plans to keep offering Zodiac excursions, kayaking, snorkeling, and escorted hikes for its travelers.
“Along with the sophisticated luxury, fine dining, top-notch service, and comfort that Seabourn is recognized for, we are assured that our expedition journeys will keep providing remarkable value and unforgettable experiences for your clients,” Coleman continued.
Travel advisors with clients currently scheduled for submarine trips have been directly contacted by Seabourn to discuss options or refunds.
