Sri Lanka is enhancing its complimentary visa initiative for travellers hailing from 40 nations as part of a significant effort to boost tourism. While tourists will still need an ETA prior to their journey, the visa cost will be eliminated for eligible nationalities.

Great news for those considering a visit to Sri Lanka in 2026: the nation has officially progressed with its initiative to offer free visas to guests from 40 countries.

--------- CONTINUE APÓS O ANÚNCIO ---------

The initiative, initially proposed in 2024, received approval on May 7, 2026, as part of the country’s Immigration and Emigration Act. The objective is to attract more global visitors to the island as the tourism sector continues its recovery.

Overview of Sri Lanka’s Free Visa Policy

Sri Lanka will not permit entirely visa-free access. Tourists from the 40 qualifying nations will still be required to submit an online application for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) prior to their travels.

The primary alteration is that the fee for the visa or ETA will be removed, indicating that qualified travellers can secure a 30-day visa at no cost.

ETA Remains Required Prior to Travel

Sri Lanka ETA Mandatory

The authorities in Sri Lanka have stated that travellers must still finalize the ETA procedure online before setting foot in the country.

Thus, while the visa cost will be waived, the requirement to go through the entry procedure remains intact. Visitors must still:

  • Apply online before departure
  • Submit travel and passport information
  • Fulfill standard entry criteria
  • Obtain ETA approval prior to arrival

Authorities assert that maintaining the ETA process is vital for security and immigration evaluations.

Process for Applying for Sri Lanka’s Free ETA

Travellers from qualifying countries can apply online via Sri Lanka’s official ETA system prior to their trip. Although the visa charge is eliminated, the application process remains obligatory.

Typical Documents Needed

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Accommodation information
  • Basic travel details

Processing Duration

Most ETA applications are handled within a time frame of 24 to 48 hours, but submitting a few days ahead of time is advisable.

Validity and Conditions of Visa

  • Valid for 30 days upon entry
  • Single-entry tourist visa
  • Capable of being extended up to 90 days in Colombo
  • Not intended for work or extended stays

Applicants also have the ability to monitor their ETA status online using their passport and reference number.

Duration of the Program

The complimentary visa initiative is anticipated to operate for one year. Furthermore, the government intends to evaluate the program after six months to determine its effectiveness in enhancing tourism and whether it should be extended.

Rationale Behind Sri Lanka Implementing This Scheme

The Sri Lankan government is optimistic that eliminating visa fees may draw in around 247,000 more tourists.

Officials predict a potential loss of about $75 million in visa revenue, yet they believe that the increased spending in tourism will yield significantly higher returns for hotels, airlines, restaurants, and local enterprises.
