Individuals planning international journeys with Japan Airlines (JAL) or Japan Transocean Air (JTA) for the period of May through June 2026 should brace for increased ticket prices. The airlines are updating their fuel surcharge owing to a significant uptick in worldwide jet fuel rates.

This modification applies to tickets issued in Japan from the date of May 1 until June 30, 2026.

Reasons Behind the Rise in Fuel Surcharge

Every two months, the fuel surcharges are modified in line with the average rates of kerosene-type jet fuel in Singapore. For February and March 2026, this average price hit USD 146.99 per barrel, reaching a notably elevated level.

Typically, such a price would categorize the surcharge into Zone R, which is the highest category. Nevertheless, a temporary government subsidy initiated during the evaluation period allows passengers to incur costs at Zone Q, causing a slight mitigation of the increase.

Put simply, costs are still on the rise, just not to the extent they could have been.

Revised Fuel Surcharge Rates (May 1 – June 30, 2026)

The updated one-way fuel surcharge amounts per passenger are outlined below.

Japan to Korea, Far East Russia, Taipei, Kaohsiung

  • Prior level (Zone H): 3,000 Yen
  • Updated level (Zone Q): 6,500 Yen
  • Reference level (Zone R): 6,800 Yen

Japan to East Asia (excluding Korea and Mongolia)

  • Prior level: 7,400 Yen
  • Updated level: 14,200 Yen
  • Reference level: 15,100 Yen

Japan to Guam, Palau, Philippines, Vietnam, Mongolia, Russia (Irkutsk)

  • Prior level: 9,500 Yen
  • Updated level: 19,500 Yen
  • Reference level: 20,500 Yen

Japan to Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Russia (Novosibirsk)

  • Prior level: 15,500 Yen
  • Updated level: 29,600 Yen
  • Reference level: 31,400 Yen

Japan to Hawaii, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka

  • Prior level: 17,800 Yen
  • Updated level: 34,700 Yen
  • Reference level: 36,600 Yen

Japan to North America, Europe, the Middle East, Oceania

  • Prior level: 29,000 Yen
  • Updated level: 56,000 Yen
  • Reference level: 59,000 Yen

Advice for readers: The newly implemented Zone Q surcharge is nearly double the previous rate in most situations, particularly for long-haul journeys.

Essential Information for Travellers

Fuel surcharges are added on top of the base fare and can greatly influence the final ticket price, especially for long-distance flights.

These fees will be applicable to:

  • Flights conducted by Japan Airlines
  • Code-sharing flights operated through partner airlines
  • Tickets issued within Japan during the announced timeframe

The finalized surcharge rates are still awaiting government endorsement.

Implications for Travellers

Summer 2026 flight prices may appear significantly higher, especially on routes to Europe, North America, and Oceania. Despite governmental assistance mitigating the rise somewhat, the increase from early 2026 figures is substantial.

For those intending to visit Japan or depart from there, it may be advantageous to secure bookings earlier and scrutinize fare breakdowns closely. Surcharges can vary bi-monthly, making the timing of your booking critical.
