For Economy travellers on ultra long-haul flights, Air New Zealand is unveiling Skynest sleep pods. Starting in November 2026, lie-flat bunk beds will be offered for as low as NZD $495 per session.
Traveling long-distance to New Zealand can be quite challenging. Spending over 15 hours seated can really drain even the most seasoned flyers. This issue is what Air New Zealand aims to address with its innovative Skynest sleep pods.
The carrier intends to provide lie-flat bunk beds specifically designed for Economy and Premium Economy flyers. The concept is straightforward: provide a genuine space for travellers to lie down and get some rest during some of the longest airline routes available.
Revolutionizing Sleep in Economy Class
Skynest will comprise six lie-flat pods configured like bunk beds in the aircraft. These pods will be situated between the Economy and Premium Economy sections on the Boeing 787-9.
Every pod provides a dedicated sleeping area with a full-length mattress, pillows, sheets, and blankets. Passengers will also have gentle lighting, airflow systems, and charging capabilities. The layout is crafted to offer tranquility and comfort, even when soaring at 35,000 feet.
Those selecting Economy or Premium Economy can opt for a four-hour sleep session during their flight. The arrangements for these sessions are designed to align with natural sleep patterns, enabling passengers to ease into rest, slumber soundly, and awaken rejuvenated.
To start, two Skynest sessions will be offered on each flight.
The Importance of Skynest for Long-Distance Travel
Being one of the most secluded places globally, New Zealand requires extensive travel time to reach. Air New Zealand is convinced that enhanced rest can help make these trips more bearable.
The airline has validated this idea with feedback from over 200 customers during its development phase. The intention is to elevate passenger comfort without necessitating the purchase of costly Business Class tickets.
Skynest further expands on the airline’s previous advancement, the Skycouch, which permits Economy travellers to form a couch-like seating area.

A Minor Adjustment to Enhance Long Flights
The reality is that numerous travellers accept the fatigue associated with lengthy flights. However, improved rest can significantly enhance the overall experience upon arrival.
Skynest does not aim to substitute higher-class cabins; instead, it provides a greater number of passengers the opportunity to rest adequately during very long flights.
For those considering a visit to New Zealand, this can make the travel experience considerably smoother.
