If you are considering residing or working in Slovakia, there’s a crucial update to bear in mind. Starting February 18, 2026, the new digital immigration platform in Slovakia will be fully operational. International applicants can now submit online requests for residence permits, passports, and EU Blue Cards.

This marks a significant transition from the previous method, which necessitated several in-person visits.

What Changes Have Occurred in 2026?

The online immigration system in Slovakia now enables foreign nationals to:

  • Submit requests for various types of residence permits
  • Renew temporary residence permits
  • Request a passport
  • Renew EU Blue Cards

After submitting the application online, candidates are required to visit the immigration office within 30 days to provide their fingerprints. Once approved, the residence permit card will be sent by courier.

This modernizes the older method where applications had to be submitted in person, approval notifications were received via SMS, and the cards had to be picked up physically.

In summary, one visit to the immigration office is now no longer necessary.

A Brief Overview of Previous Delays

The initial rollout was less than satisfactory. In July 2025, although the portal was accessible, it did not permit applications for residence permits, passports, or EU Blue Cards. This led to a great deal of confusion among applicants as the system was only partially operational.

Currently, these issues seem to have been addressed.

Understanding How the New Slovakia Immigration Portal Operates

Here is the current process:

  1. Submit your application online via the official digital immigration platform.
  2. Schedule and attend a biometric appointment within 30 days.
  3. Await approval.
  4. Receive your residence permit card by courier.

This results in fewer queues and less paperwork for many international workers and their families.

Relevance for Skilled Workers and EU Blue Card Applicants

Slovakia aims to attract skilled foreign professionals, particularly through the EU Blue Card program. Transitioning to a digital application process enhances the country’s competitiveness compared to other destinations within the EU.

The EU Blue Card holds significant importance for highly qualified individuals from outside the EU. Being able to renew it online streamlines the process and alleviates stress, especially for those who are already employed full-time.

This change could also expedite hiring processes for employers in Slovakia.

Actions for Travellers and Expats Moving Forward

If you plan to relocate to Slovakia in 2026, it’s advisable to verify if your application can now be processed online. Keep the following in mind:

  • It’s still necessary to provide fingerprints in person.
  • The biometric appointment needs to be completed within 30 days of application submission.
  • Processing durations can fluctuate based on demand.

While the system minimizes office visits, it does not eliminate all required in-person steps.

Concluding Thoughts

Across Europe, various governments are gradually digitizing their immigration systems. Slovakia is now aligning itself with this evolving trend.

For foreign individuals, particularly skilled laborers and long-term residents, this enhancement simplifies the procedures and provides more predictability.

Although it’s not completely flawless, it’s certainly a significant improvement over the previous lengthy waits in immigration offices.
