Passengers traveling with IndiGo can expect to see an uptick in ticket costs starting from March 14, 2026.

The largest airline in India has declared a fuel surcharge applicable to domestic and international flights following a significant increase in aviation fuel prices in recent weeks. This rise is attributed to the continuing geopolitical instability in the Middle East, leading to higher global jet fuel prices.

IndiGo Fuel Surcharge: What Are the Costs for Passengers?

As stated by the airline, the additional charge will vary based on the flight’s distance and route. Travelers should expect surcharges starting from:

  • ₹425 for shorter flights
  • As much as ₹2,300 for longer flights

It was confirmed by the airline that this surcharge will be applicable to all tickets purchased from March 14 forward, including both domestic and international journeys.

Route Fuel Surcharge
Within Domestic India ₹425
Indian Subcontinent ₹425
Middle East ₹900
South East Asia & China ₹1800
Africa ₹1800
Europe ₹2300

Reasons Behind Airlines Implementing a Fuel Surcharge

Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) is a crucial operating cost for airlines, with significant reliance on it.

Recent conflict in the Middle Eastern region has caused fuel prices to rise across international markets. Data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) indicates that jet fuel prices in the area have surged by over 85 percent.

This situation results in a sudden rise in operating expenses for airlines. One approach to mitigate this cost hike is to introduce a temporary fuel surcharge rather than adjusting base ticket prices immediately.

Air India Group Also Imposes a Fuel Surcharge

Following in IndiGo’s footsteps, the Air India group, which includes Air India Express, took similar measures earlier this week. They implemented a new fuel surcharge on March 12, 2026.

The breakdown of these charges is as follows:

Domestic Flights

  • ₹399 per ticket for domestic routes
  • This surcharge is likewise applicable to flights within the South Asian region
Region New Fuel Surcharge
Domestic India INR 399
SAARC countries INR 399
West Asia / Middle East USD 10

International Flights

Fuel surcharges differ based on the destination:

Region Prior Surcharge Increase Current Surcharge
Southeast Asia USD 40 USD 20 USD 60
Africa USD 60 USD 30 USD 90

Airlines indicate that these charges may be implemented in stages across various routes as fuel prices continue to change.

Understanding Fuel Surcharge

A fuel surcharge is an extra charge that airlines impose on ticket prices when the cost of aviation fuel significantly escalates. Rather than permanently hiking the base fare, airlines opt to temporarily include this additional fee to counteract rising fuel expenses.

Fuel prices can fluctuate rapidly due to global occurrences such as conflicts, supply interruptions, or instability in oil markets. When prices normalize, airlines may decrease or eliminate the surcharge.

What Passengers Can Anticipate

The introduction of this surcharge entails modestly increased ticket prices in the near term for travelers.

Nonetheless, airlines affirm that this tactic is crucial for managing rising fuel expenditures while sustaining operational capabilities. Should global fuel prices stabilize, there may be adjustments to these fees in the future.

At present, those booking flights from mid-March should anticipate a minor additional fuel charge reflected in the total ticket price.
