Update Feb. 12, 8:00 a.m. EST
As reported by the AP, a conflict between the Pentagon and the FAA has led to the closure of the airspace surrounding El Paso airport. An anonymous source cited by the AP on Thursday evening noted that the Pentagon intended to evaluate a laser system for neutralizing drones operated by Mexican drug trafficking organizations. This initiative created tension with the FAA, which was focused on maintaining commercial air traffic in El Paso.
Allegedly, a meeting was planned between both parties for later in February, but the Pentagon opted to proceed with the technology test sooner, prompting the FAA to shut down the airspace.
Update: Feb. 11, 10:30 a.m. EST
Shortly after the FAA released the NOTAM to close the airspace around El Paso International, it reversed the decision, which was initially set to last until at least Feb. 20 for “security” concerns.
“There is no risk to commercial aviation,” the FAA stated via social media later on Wednesday morning. “All flights will return to their normal operations.”

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has suspended all commercial flight operations at Texas’ El Paso International Airport (ELP) through at least Feb. 20 due to “security” concerns.
This airport ranks as the busiest commercial hub in West Texas, serving over 4 million travelers each year. Most significant U.S. airlines operate flights from El Paso, including Alaska, American, Delta, Southwest, and United. The majority of its services are within the domestic arena.
The airport indicated that the announcement came unexpectedly from the FAA and “seems to be related to security.”
The FAA directive encompasses a 10-mile radius around the airport, excluding Mexican airspace in that zone, citing “security” as the reason, yet little else is currently understood. The notice states merely, “temporary flight restrictions due to special security reasons.”
The nearest major international airport to El Paso is Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ), located approximately 270 miles north of El Paso. Tucson International Airport (TUS) is the subsequent closest, situated around 320 miles to the west of the airport.
