While the word “immersive” might seem clichéd, it fits perfectly when referring to Las Vegas’ extravagant AREA15, the expansive art and entertainment complex situated just west of the Strip.
Hard to define, AREA15 is best characterized as a blend of an eclectic art installation and a surreal, neon-soaked multiverse filled with technology and surreal experiences, thriving within mostly indoor event areas that span nearly 40 acres. Additionally, being in Vegas, dining, beverages, and shopping venues are interspersed throughout the vast “retailtainment” zone. Having opened roughly 5 years ago, the facility has experienced rapid growth, doubling its size since it launched. Entry is complimentary, but while visitors can appreciate the art and architecture, the “experiences” require payment, which is quite reasonable given the variety of activities, events, and attractions available.
Ticket options for single and multi-day visits are priced between $49 and $250, featuring a corresponding, graduated scale of access to attractions. However, the Level 2 Access Pass (ranging from $69 to $99, based on the day, time, and any available discounts) is particularly appealing, granting guests access to a representative selection of 18 of the most sought-after experiences, rides, and attractions.
Zone 1: The Bunkers
The initial structure, known as Zone 1: The Bunkers, accommodates the majority of the smaller experiences in a neon-lit, lavishly adorned, multi-tiered area. Within this space, Birdly, a virtual reality flight simulation, allows riders to experience the thrill of flight – as they flap their wings – soaring through virtual cities, while families with young kids will enjoy the numerous neon-bright, endless landscapes offered at Wink World.
For those with a fondness for retro gaming, the classic pinball machines – lovingly refurbished and maintained by a devoted technician – evoke nostalgia and create new experiences at the two-level Asylum Bar & Arcade (tokens are included with the Level 2 Access Pass). In the realm of competitive fun, Dueling Axes boasts 18 lanes for axe throwing, enabling participants to unleash their frustrations on the target instead of one another. Meanwhile, for introspective minds, Brainstorm’s reaction centers claim to capture visitors’ thoughts, aspirations, and dreams as their movements generate response patterns. However, the centerpiece attraction in the original AREA15 venue is Omega Mart, an otherworldly, psychedelic art installation by Meow Wolf from New Mexico, cleverly masquerading as a grocery store.
The “products” on display feature witty wordplay while also hinting at the larger narrative unfolding here. Yet, it’s the concealed portals (look for the entrance to a walk-in cooler) that lead to expansive, multi-sensory experiences opening up to wildly imaginative spaces and art installations that contribute to a deeper story arc that can be explored – or simply admired. Essentially, Omega Mart offers both shallow and deep enjoyment, undoubtedly warranting a couple of hours spent uncovering the marvels that Meow Wolf presents as “in store” for guests.
Just adjacent to the Zone 1 structure, another sizable building hosts The John Wick Experience, where fans of the John Wick action film series find themselves immersed in a setting reflecting
the menacing ambiance of The Continental, the fictional, luxurious hotel that serves as a refuge for the criminal underworld. Guests are transported into the thrilling realm of the iconic assassin, complete with interactive components, themed environments, and narrative storytelling.
Zone 2: The Terminals
In the newly established Zone 2: The Terminals, no one can overlook the front half of a Boeing 747 aircraft protruding from the side of the building. Close by, Universal Destinations and Experiences’ inaugural year-round horror attraction, Universal Horror Unleashed, is now operational. Inside, multiple haunted regions vividly portray visitors’ deepest fears with film-inspired scares from “The Exorcist: Believer,” “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” and the company’s original concept, “Scarecrow: The Reaping.”
Interstellar Arc is a VR Tour-de-Force
Amidst these and AREA15’s other large-scale attractions and experiences – all of which are noteworthy, Interstellar Arc stands out as a remarkable virtual reality experience that elevates VR to new heights through unparalleled sensory immersion that convinces guests they are visiting a distant, futuristic realm.
This hour-long adventure begins as small groups of guests wear VR headsets, listening carefully to the staff’s detailed introduction on the technology’s use. But as soon as the headsets come to life, the instant leap into an alternate, astonishing universe – a realm set centuries ahead and light-years from Earth – is breathtakingly impressive.
The fully-engaging journey unfolds within a custom-designed, 20,000-square-foot venue featuring state-of-the-art visuals (including authentic NASA/ISS imagery), interactive settings, and sensory world-building that surpasses earlier virtual reality experiences. Indeed, this adventure easily risks sensory overload, if not for its astonishing realism.
In addition, the HEXO spacesuits donned by participants are intricately designed, offering functionalities like a photo camera and a communication system that links to fellow explorers. Virtual handrails during the “journey” correspond with real ones, aiding in orientation as you are led on this expedition by a captivating blue fox with enchanting eyes.
Ultimately, the entire journey transports you to a world that is as breathtaking as it is imaginative, as bewildering as it is ethereal, and one that lingers in your mind long after returning to our now-ordinarily mundane Earth.
AREA15 also regularly hosts block parties, raves, massives, and unique events. For details, pricing, and an event calendar, visit https://area15.com/
