Canada has rolled out a temporary exemption for biometrics specifically aimed at certain FIFA-invited foreign applicants seeking a Temporary Resident Visa in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This initiative is intended to expedite the visa application process and minimize delays in appointments.

Great news for soccer enthusiasts: Canada, a co-host of the FIFA World Cup 2026, has eased visa regulations for international guests.

Markedly, the nation is already gearing up for the influx of visitors anticipated during the FIFA World Cup 2026. Consequently, the government has implemented an additional temporary adjustment to simplify travel for specific invitees from FIFA.

Biometric Waiver for Certain FIFA-Invited Guests

The Canadian Government has unveiled a second short-term public policy in relation to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This policy focuses primarily on streamlining visa processing.

Select foreign nationals who possess an official invitation letter from FIFA will be exempt from the biometrics requirement when they apply for a Temporary Resident Visa, commonly referred to as a TRV.

Typically, visa applicants are required to visit a biometric collection facility to provide fingerprints and a photo. This process can be time-consuming, particularly when there are limited appointment slots available. By eliminating this obligation for qualifying applicants, Canada aims to alleviate delays leading up to the tournament.

Who is Eligible for the Exemption?

In order to take advantage of this temporary provision, applicants must adhere to the following criteria:

  • Submit an application for a Temporary Resident Visa between November 25, 2025 and July 20, 2026
  • Possess a valid invitation letter provided by FIFA
  • Fulfill all other admissibility criteria according to Canada’s immigration regulations

This policy is applicable to both fresh applications and those already under review as of November 25, 2025.

If you fulfill these prerequisites, attending a biometric appointment may not be necessary.

Significance of This for Travel to the 2026 World Cup

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is expected to draw thousands of officials, staff, partners, and others connected to the event to Canada. The biometrics process can significantly prolong visa timelines as applicants must schedule and attend an in-person appointment.

By forgoing this procedure for certain FIFA invitees, Canada is addressing a major obstacle in the Temporary Resident Visa application process.

This means for travelers:

  • Reduced appointment requirements
  • Less documentation necessary
  • Possibly quicker visa resolutions

This follows an earlier public policy that permitted work permit exemptions for specific FIFA-invited foreign personnel associated with the event.

Duration of This Policy

The biometrics waiver is a temporary measure. It will remain valid until July 20, 2026, unless the government decides to terminate it sooner. After this date, the conventional biometrics regulations will likely be reinstated.

Work Permit Waiver for FIFA Staff

In 2025, Canada introduced special regulations to facilitate the organization of the 2026 FIFA events. Foreign nationals coming for short-term, FIFA-related employment may not be required to obtain a standard work permit.

This temporary exemption from work permits aims to simplify the entry process for those assisting in the orchestration and management of the tournament.

US Provides Accelerated Visa Appointments

Canada isn’t the sole host nation making travel easier for World Cup attendees. The United States, which will host matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has implemented a faster visa interview process for eligible ticket purchasers.

Individuals who bought their match tickets directly from FIFA can now apply for priority visa interview appointments via FIFA PASS.

How FIFA PASS Operates

To utilize this feature, ticket purchasers must first sign up for FIFA PASS on FIFA’s official site. Once registered, they can request a prioritized US visa interview time slot as part of their visa application.

What Travelers Should Do at This Moment

If you are planning to attend activities related to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada and possess an invitation letter from FIFA, please review the updated regulations before submitting your Temporary Resident Visa application.

Qualified applicants who apply between November 25, 2025, and July 20, 2026, may be exempt from the biometrics requirement. This policy also encompasses applications that are already being processed from November 25, 2025.

Bear in mind, obtaining a visa is not guaranteed. You need to comply with Canada’s admissibility conditions. If you qualify, these temporary regulations could expedite your travel and help you reach the tournament more swiftly.
